We hosted a webinar diving deep into the realities of working with price transparency data and how it can be transformed into strategic insights for healthcare payers, providers, and consultants. Hosted by CEO Jason Hines and CTO G. Griffin, the session walked through the scale and complexity of this data, highlighted common challenges, and showcased a live demo analyzing payer rates for gastroenterologists in Idaho.
Jason kicked off with a personal note: while the Gigasheet team didn’t come from healthcare, they’ve spent their careers wrangling massive datasets across defense, Google, and cybersecurity, and know how to extract insights from chaos. And healthcare price transparency data is, in a word, chaotic.
Even a small market like Idaho produces over 1.2 terabytes of JSON payer files. After processing, deduplication, and cleansing (including filtering out “zombie rates” and invalid NPIs) that dataset shrinks to just over 200 million relevant rows. That’s a 99.4% reduction in size, which underscores the noise buried within the files.
Even with CMS improvements to the schema, the data structure remains messy. One provider might have rates tied to multiple TINs, each with different rates across place-of-service codes, modifiers, and payer types. For example, a physical therapist moonlighting at several locations might appear as multiple providers unless you know how to resolve those connections.
To navigate this, Gigasheet enriches raw MRF data with:
All of this is pulled into a massive spreadsheet-style interface purpose-built for big data. This means users can drill down, group, and filter with real speed and flexibility.
In the session's highlight, our CTO, Garth Griffin, walked through how a health plan could identify competitive rates for a common gastroenterology procedure (colonoscopy) using real payer data from Idaho. The team filtered millions of rows down to just 102. Each row was valid, standardized, and contextualized.
What started as a vague question: “Are our gastro rates competitive in Idaho?”, turned into a gold nugget: the exact negotiated rates across four major payers for one top provider. The visualization made it clear how their plan’s offers stacked up, helping them shape a smarter recruitment strategy.
Just as importantly, the full lineage of every row was preserved—users can trace a value back to the original file, schema, and publication date. That’s essential for building trust in any AI- or dashboard-driven summary.
When asked how Gigasheet differs from other price transparency vendors, Jason and G emphasized three key points:
Whether you’re managing provider contracts, scouting new markets, or evaluating competitor rates, Gigasheet brings you the depth and flexibility to get answers you can trust.
The next webinar, coming in August, will focus on how Gigasheet is applying AI to make this complex data even more accessible, without sacrificing accuracy or traceability.
